SS2017 wedding trend predictions by Katherine Hudson

There are few people to rival the creative style of Katherine Hudson who founded the The Arabian Tent Company in 2004. The heady vibe of festivals and marquee parties captured her imagination, she was hooked and decided she had to try and put on her own event. She searched the UK for a suitable party tent, and finding nothing but white PVC marquees, Katherine realised she would have to try a little harder if she wanted to do something truly special.

Katherine set off to Morocco to talk to a man about a tent! The Moroccan tent she first bought (and infamously drove back to the UK strapped to the roof of her van) may not have been anything compared with the wondrous interiors The Arabian Tent Company boasts today, but it was the beginning of something exciting and different. Word soon spread throughout the party world and people all over the country started to request the marquee for all sorts of festivals and events. The more tented parties she threw, the more her inspiration grew. Soon she decided to design her own marquee linings and collected cushions and furniture, ornaments and feathers, candles and lanterns to adorn the interiors.  This was how the Arabian Tent Company was born, how it grew, and (for the most part) how it continues to grow today.

With the largest collection of unique marquees in the UK, a wonderful team of creative and skilled marquee crew, drapers and event specialists and a whole lot of passion and attention to detail, The Arabian Tent Company are proud to have supplied magical marquees, cosy furniture and interesting props and furnishings to some of the UK’s most spectacular parties  and weddings for an entire decade.

So Katherine, what do you think the colours of SS2017 weddings will be?

SS2016 is all about pretty pastels and sparkles, so I think we’ll be getting a bit more dark and moody next year and predict aubergine will feature along with a variety of greens and woody hues, but I reckon the shimmer is set to stay.

If you think there is going to be a popular theme occurring for couples planning for next year what might it be?

I feel couples are veering away from a set ‘theme’ as such, and instead are drawing inspiration from fashion, celebrity weddings (we have clients recreating Kim Kardashian’s flower wall this year!) and Instagram! It’s more about a ‘look’ that people want at the moment for the décor than a theme, but there’s a riot of colour being used at weddings and events this year inspired by the Rio Olympics, which has gained momentum from the Mexican décor and food trend we’ve been enjoying for the last couple of years. For SS2017 wedding trend predictions regarding food I reckon street-food will still be a very popular way of feeding your guests either for the midnight nibbles or even the main course itself, I think we’ll see more South American influences in our wedding themes, although I think this is unlikely to be a ‘theme’ and more one element of the day, creating the overall effect of a kaleidoscope of trends.

Backdrops for ceremonies are becoming increasingly popular, how do you go about styling something like this when you’ve not known the couple for long at all?

Creating something beautiful that works with the rest of the décor and other elements of the wedding is the best place to start rather than trying to make it too personal – it might be needed to hide something unsightly behind the ceremony area, or just create a pretty canvas for photographs to be taken.  Tying it in with the rest of the décor and finding out if the wedding dress lace or chiffon?  Are they mainly using flowers or foliage?  And if in doubt – you can’t go wrong with flowers!

What are your favourite wedding trends of this year?

Weddings this year are looking so pretty!  I’m loving the delicate blush, cream and white palette that we’re seeing, and I’m loving the metallic trend too – it makes the pastels pop.  I’m also a huge fan of the rustic/ woodland look that is continuing and evolving at the moment.  Bringing the feel of nature into your wedding has such a calming, authentic feel to it.

How do you feel about balloons at wedding?

I’m not a huge fan of balloons in the traditional sense and consider them lazy decor, but who could not love the larger-than-life matt-finish versions we’ve seen blowing over from the States recently, with their tassle garland tails and pretty pastel hues. Definitely a fan of those and so they will remain as one of my ‘to stay’ SS2017 wedding trend predictions!

Do you think photo booths are going to become less trendy over the next few years or do you think their popularity will increase?

Over the last few years photo booths have become a must-have at weddings and for good reason – not only is it a fun thing to do when you’re feeling merry to don a silly hat, wig and glasses and take pictures with your besties to immortalise your involvement with the party.  It’s a bit like sending a postcard from the wedding!  I’m a huge fan of interaction at weddings and think that the more of it that can be created – getting your guests involved with what’s going on around them, makes for the best wedding parties – and photo booths definitely tick that box, so I can’t see their popularity fading, especially with our fascination with selfies so I expect them to grow in popularity.
Are couples opting for less dramatic cakes again or do you think a colour eruption is upon us in term of edibles.
Although it really depends on the couple with this one, with the ever-rising trend for ‘naked cakes’ festooned with flowers and fruit rather than frosting, and the rustic/woodland inspired weddings this year, I do think in general the trend for cakes is for ones that look like food, rather than art.

I am actually thankful that the likes of Pinterest and Rock My Wedding weren’t around when I was wed as I think I would have been sacked from my PA position for wasting time online. Countryside Wedding Venue of The Year is a Truly Quirky One!

 

We are as PROUD AS A PEACOCK to tell you that South Farm, the Truly Quirky Cambridgeshire wedding venue, has been awarded the prestigious accolade of Countryside Wedding Venue of The Year, East of England in The Wedding Industry Awards 2016 so we’re SHOUTING about it!

Christine, one of South Farm’s owners, Becky, General Manager and South Farm’s team of Wedding Planners and Event Managers were at the award ceremony and were truly chuffed to receive their award. This puts South Farm in the coveted position of National Finalist with a well deserved seat in the category of Countryside Wedding Venue of the Year at The Wedding Industry Awards 2016. The National Final will take place on Thursday 14th January 2016 in the spectacular surroundings of the Cafe de Paris, set in the beating heart of London’s West End. The 2015 Private View at Pennard House.

Bohemian, elegant estate, Pennard House, tucked away in the rolling hills of the Somerset countryside, is to host an exclusive private view on Sunday 19th July from 1pm – 5pm. This event will be the perfect opportunity for couples to explore the rustic retreat for their ‘big day’. Couples that book their wedding on the day will receive 5% off the price of their wedding package.

Apparently there’s a couple of weekends left in 2015 at The Bell Inn!!

So, I heard from Mr Squirrel (pictured below) this morning that there a couple of dates left in the diary at The Bell Inn Ticehurst. This is a pub like no other, this is a pub that gives you goose bumps, this is pub with something special, it really does have to be seen to be believed.

This pub is set in the glorious village of Ticehurst in East Sussex and boasts an abundance of very unusual accommodation, including the ‘Love Nest’ complete with round bed and fairy lights galore. There are also 4 other lodges and above the pub there are 7 unique and beautifully styled rooms with names including ‘Stranger Than Truth’ and ‘Moon Wild’.

Whether you want a cosy winter wedding with the log fires burning or to throw open the doors
to let the summer sunshine in, with exclusive use of the garden, The Bell can offer it all.

The pub is a licensed wedding venue with a maximum capacity of 80 guests for the wedding ceremony and formal reception, and up to 120 guests for the evening reception.

So if you love quirky and you are considering a wedding in a pub you better get on the buzzer and call Zoe. She will let you know what dates they have available and then she’ll invite you along and basically, she’ll blow your mind with what this place has on offer.

Unique, Hertfordshire wedding venue South Farm are having an open evening!

The lovely Jane of South Farm got in touch to let us know about something rather exciting at South Farm . . .

Our unique Hertfordshire wedding venue, South Farm are holding an Open Evening on Tuesday 9th June 2015 from 4pm until 8.30pm.

The Open Evening is a great opportunity to see all that South Farm has to offer, meet the staff and enjoy some complimentary light refreshments. South Farm will be welcoming both existing clients and any new guests who may be interested in holding a wedding, conference, anniversary, birthday party or any other event at South Farm.

Come and have a leisurely wander around the beautiful grounds, take a tour through our Country Farm House and visit our majestic Tudor Barn, lovely Old Dairy, individual guest bedrooms and authentic Romany Caravans. 

Tuk Tuk and Buggy rides will be available around the grounds, taking in views of our smallholding and farmyard animals, and of course you might even sneak a peek of our divine Kune Kune pigs. Our pretty garden Summer House will be set for an outdoor ceremony with live music playing in the background to set the scene. In the Tudor Barn there will be a top table laid for a traditional 3 course Wedding Breakfast and lots of information on what South Farm can offer you and your guests.

Some of our favourite suppliers will be joining us and there will also be a fantastic display of some of our home grown organic produce and homemade preserves as well as light refreshments available throughout the evening. There is no need to book, just come along on the day.

Meet Becky, Events Manager with Browning Bros.

Who are you and what is your role with Browning Bros. Events? 

Becky Kruger- Event Manager at this fabulously unique Essex wedding venue!

How did you get involved with the venue?

I got involved with the company because I was looking for work experience in events having a passion for the industry. As I went to Newcastle University with Nat and Archie I had heard about the exciting business so got in touch in the hope they needed an assistant. Best decision yet! 

The venue is ‘Truly Quirky’ we know that already but what do you feel makes it stand out from the wedding venue crowd? 

Well where can you get married these days and not be told what to do?! Browning Bros gives you the platform and you can do as you please with it. They don’t pressure you to use their local businesses they encourage you to be as creative as you want on your special day. None of this in – out malarkey which you see in many Essex wedding venues, this is why I know they’re so great.

The owners are truly relaxed and add to the ‘quirkiness’ of their unique wedding venue, nothing is a problem for them and they are extremely creative themselves having been to a fair few festivals and parties themselves! (they know what looks good), they have decorated their venue with the most amazing colourful lights which adds a mesmerizing feel, like being at a festival .

Oh and their mega sound ceiling- I mean it’s like being at Glastonbury under that thing but 5 steps outside it the you can hear yourself whispering. It’s neighbour friendly and super fun!! (Yes I have been caught dancing under it once or twice- guuiiiiilty!)

If you could choose one song/album to listen to while you’re doing what you do at the venue what would it be?

Bakermat, Bob, Bobobo, Chris Malinchak, Goldfish – anything jazzy and upbeat is good at work- gets you in da moooood for daaaancing… romaaaaancing!

What’s the best thing about your job? 

Working alongside the owners – they are extremely funny relaxed guys to work with and make planning events really fun (which is what they should be!). I never felt beneath them but part of a really exciting journey. I enjoyed going to work as each day as every day was so different. One minute we were building a shower, the next we we’re showing clients around the venue.  I mean I couldn’t write down the different things we did. I learnt so much about the planning side of events to- but overall I loved seeing the hard work being put into place and managing the event on the day. Nothing pleased me more than to see smiley happy faces. Each event Browning Bros. created did this and it was magical to watch. I also love a party!

 

If you were planning your wedding at the venue what would you choose in terms of styling and flowers? 

Ahaha, honestly I have not really thought about this before but at this unique venue I know I could be as wild as I wanted to be and the space is so grand you could literally have a mini festival wedding – oooh this excites me! My friends would love a mini festival for my wedding. Ha. I am however a traditional type of gal at heart so there would have to be white roses everywhere.. down the path, around the arches, on the pontoon.. in my floral crown, you name it.

I would like everything to be white and yellow.. so tents, wedding flowers etc.. it would have to be very personal to me and my future hubby (whoever he is) to incorporate us into the theme. It would be a mixture of bohemian chic, festival wedding with traditional elegance as I think that would create a stunning scene next to the lake and surrounded by woodland. Lighting would be key which Browning Bros are terrific at.


And lastly, have you ever had a sip of champagne on the job? Yeah you  have!

Champagne, beer, cocktails, wine, the list could go on!! haha

Here’s Conor from Smock Alley Theatre . . .

Who are you and what is your role at Smock Alley?

My name is Conor Byrne and I am the Events Manager at Smock Alley Theatre.

 

How did you get involved with the venue and how long ago was that?

I have been working in Smock for over 2 and a half years now. I had been working in corporate finance and hated it. (me too Conor!) I had my degree and masters in Drama Studies and had always wanted to work in theatre in some capactiy but after college the lure of a full time, well paid job over ruled my romantic notions of working in a theatre. But after 6 and a half years in the rat race I had had more than enough. I took voluntary redundancy and started working in Smock as the Front of House Manager. After a year that was Front of House and Events Manager and now Im the full time Events Manager.

 

The venue is ‘Truly Quirky’ we know that already but what do you feel makes it stand out from the wedding venue crowd?

What I love about Smock is that it truly is a hidden gem right in the heart of the city. It stands in the oldest part of Dublin, facing right on to the River Liffey and has SO much history behind it.It was a church from 1811 until 1989 and even now we are couples are still able to get married in the building. And one little piece of personal history that I love is that its the building in which my mother was christened.

 

If you could choose one song/album to listen to while you’re doing what you do at the venue what would it be?

Im really torn about this as I think it should be something very calm and serene to keep Brides happy……but I would personally like something by the White Stripes or The Gossip to keep my energy up.

 

What’s the best thing about your job?

Having people come in, not sure what they want their wedding to be like and helping them to create the wedding that THEY want.

If you were planning your wedding at the venue what would you choose in terms of styling and flowers?

Sad as it is I have my wedding planned hahahha. I would like it to be quite simple but elegant. A mix of rustic and formal. So using our lovely rough oak banquet tables but with beautiful plates and glassware. Flowers would have to be Sweet Pea as my Grandmother always grew it, peonies and old English roses with a lot of greenery.

 

And lastly, have you ever had a sip of champagne on the job? Yeah you have!

Of course I have.…..and sometimes more than a sip. But ONLY once everything has gone off smoothly.

The Bell Inn

To start this amazing glitter ball rolling me and my husband Joss, (who also builds websites, lucky me!) went to stay at the venue that triggered this idea. The Bell Inn, Ticehurst. I was introduced to this venue when they exhibited at one of my wedding fairs a few years ago, and at a recent ‘Quirky Boutique Wedding Fair’, I got talking to Zoe, their wedding coordinator who invited us to ‘see for ourselves’ what this country pub had to offer. She said ‘I can’t explain it to you, you need to see it’ oh how right she was!

To say we were blown away is an understatement. We arrived in darkness after a long drive so were thrilled to be shown to our bedroom which was just the most gorgeous bolt hole aptly named ‘The Moon Wild’, full of awesome quirks like, oh, a silver birch tree, a stunning brass free standing bath and a flatscreen tv embraced by a gold frame, not to mention the bottle of red wine that was MUCH needed. Down in the bar we sat and admired the decor, the pile of books pillar, the taxidermy squirrel, the posters on the wall dating back to the turn of the century advertising events that happened in that very space. The food was utterly delicious, we were both totally impressed and raved about it to all our pals the following week.

What we were not expecting that evening was for the manager to show us something we had heard about and were waiting until the morning to see. We were led out in to what you would expect to be ‘the pub garden’. Oh my, oh me oh my, have we landed in Oz?

What was this before our eyes? One minute we were sat in a more than awesome pub and now we were looking at a collection of beautifully, unique and well, totally quirky lodges, built around a raised wood burning area. We did that thing where we just kept on looking at each other saying ‘oh my god look at this, OH my god look at this, OH MY god LOOK at this‘ as we snuck around like mice in a new piece of fairy woodland. This is something special, this is somewhere you want to borrow in to, you want to live there! The Love Nest was the lodge that really did it for me, it is what it says it is, a beautiful round structure covered in twigs, inside is the most amazing bed, shower room and every luxury you could dream of. Want to sit on your nest in egg chairs? Oh go on then, enjoy the view of the fire pit won’t you.

All this, and I haven’t even touched on the ‘Table in the Stable’ which can be draped in the red carpet that couples are invited to walk along after the ceremony while your guests raise a toast and take in the decor, such as the taxidermy buffalo head and the wine coolers, oh the wine coolers!
